Discover the Story Behind the Spotlight

Starling Thomas is a writer and director from Dallas, Texas. She is also the Communications Director for The LOHM. Starling was wrongfully convicted in 2016 until she became part of the 2% of the incarcerated people in the United States who win their case on appeal. Her mission is to educate women who are battling the federal system and fighting non-violent offenses.

Starling’s film, Harvest, won Best Screenplay at the Circle City Film Festival and is was featured in the festival circuit as well as other festivals including the San Francisco Black Film Festival. She currently serves on the board of the Dallas Film Alliance where she seeks to expand the film community in Dallas and her feature documentary, Black Butterflies, focusing on the impact of incarceration on women and their families is set to release in 2023.

Since her release from prison she graduated from the Faces of Women Imprisoned revolutionary speakers bureau program that elevates the voices of women impacted by the criminal legal system, this is just the beginning of Starling’s fight for the dignity of incarcerated women and criminal justice reform.
